Customs & Operations Clerk – Night Shift (Perishable Imports)

Salary: c.£37,000–£40,000 per annum

Shift: 4 on / 4 off | 12-hour shifts | 7pm start

At Vanta Staffing, we’re recruiting on behalf of one of our valued clients in Slough for an experienced Customs & Operations Clerk to join their night team, supporting the end-to-end customs clearance of time-critical perishable imports arriving into the UK (primarily via air and road from the EU).

The role

Working nights, you’ll play a key part in keeping shipments moving smoothly and compliantly, ensuring goods are cleared quickly and correctly. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing customs clearance from start to finish, with a strong focus on perishable goods

  • Ensuring full compliance with Border Force, Port Health, and APHA requirements

  • Completing and controlling ETSF entries, ensuring import controls and procedures are followed correctly

  • Handling APHA applications and ensuring documentation is accurate and submitted on time

  • Liaising with Transport Operations to monitor shipments in transit and resolve issues quickly

  • Providing clear updates to stakeholders, keeping communication proactive and professional

  • Maintaining accurate records and working confidently with data and spreadsheets

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who can hit the ground running and bring a calm, methodical approach to a time-sensitive operation:

  • Experience with customs entries and import clearance

  • Knowledge of ETSF protocols, Port/Plant Health applications, and EU import border procedures

  • Perishable / time-critical import experience (highly desirable)

  • Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills with confidence handling detailed spreadsheets

  • Excellent attention to detail and strong compliance mindset

  • Confident communicator with a proactive, problem-solving approach

  • Able to work under pressure, prioritise workloads, and keep multiple clearances moving at once
